# REST APIs

> Connect any system with a REST API, using the authentication it expects.

**Connection type:** Credential

Connect SubVerse to any system that has a REST API: your own backend, an internal tool, or a third-party service without a dedicated integration. You store the credentials once, then call the API from Functions and Orchestrations.

## What you can do

| Capability | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Call any REST API** | Send requests to any endpoint, with the method, headers, and body you choose. |
| **Give agents a custom tool** | Let an agent look something up or take an action in your own system, such as checking an order in your internal database. |
| **Use the right authentication** | Seven credential types cover the common ways APIs authenticate, from a simple API key to OAuth 2.0. |
| **Keep credentials out of your code** | Secrets are stored encrypted on the connection, not written into a function. |
| **React to events** | Start an orchestration from an event in the connected system. |

## Credential types

| Type | The API expects |
| - | - |
| **HTTP Basic Auth** | A username and password |
| **HTTP Bearer Auth** | A token in the `Authorization` header |
| **HTTP Header Auth** | An API key in a header of its own, such as `X-API-Key` |
| **HTTP Query Auth** | A key in the URL, such as `?api_key=…` |
| **HTTP Custom Auth** | Something the other types don't cover |
| **JWT Auth** | A signed JSON Web Token |
| **OAuth 2.0 API** | An OAuth 2.0 flow |

## What you'll need

* The API's documentation, so you know how it authenticates
* The credentials themselves, such as a key, token, or client ID and secret
* The endpoint URLs you'll call

<Note>
Step-by-step setup is in the SubVerse dashboard: go to **Integrations → Rest APIs** and open the **Documentation** tab.
